Why I joined Superpower

A letter on print, leaving Medium, and making health feel like curiosity instead of dread.

I used to run a Risograph studio in Atlanta, printing for local artists and small businesses and teaching workshops. I still collect print ephemera. Magazines, posters, whatever I can get my hands on. It is where my love of design comes from and I do not expect that to change.

For the last three years I led brand design at Medium, mostly on my own, building it out with a new editorial lens. The work was rewarding and I still felt capped by it. I missed having a creative team around me. I knew Hannah from design Twitter, and I knew Superpower because of its brand before I knew anything else about it. We ran into each other in San Francisco, started talking, and that conversation turned into this one.

I have had my own bad run with the healthcare system, so I know what it is to leave an appointment with no answers. Health is a fraught thing for most people, full of anxiety they did not ask for. If brand work can replace a little of that dread with curiosity, that is worth doing.

Talking to Eric during the process is what sold me. His energy is off the charts, and the design team has both the ideas and the autonomy to act on them. I am starting on content, bringing creative direction to the media work we are building. What I want out of it is not a metric. It is one person saying something we made changed how they handled their own health.

I am in Chicago with my partner and our cat, Corndog. I played in two bands once and still dabble. The rest is walks, farmer's markets and White Sox games.
